Dostoevsky was a respected and celebrated novelist, short story writer, essayist, journalist and philosopher. Crime and Punishment was written by Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) and was published in 1866. As one critic observed, ‘the book illuminates the eternal conflicts of the human heart’.īefore we go any further, let us deal with a few facts. As with all great literature, the setting and the period are not as important as the ideas, dilemmas and richness of the characters featured in the narrative which speak to each generation and have a timeless universality to them.
